While you wait, or if calling feels too much

  • Tell someone near you how bad it is. A text that says “I am not okay” is enough.
  • Move away from anything you could use to hurt yourself.
  • Stay around other people, or on the phone with someone, until the worst passes.
  • Avoid alcohol and drugs for now. They make dark feelings heavier.
  • These feelings are intense, and they do pass. You only need to get through the next hour.

Worried about someone else?

Ask them directly whether they are thinking about suicide. Asking does not put the idea in their head, and it shows them it is safe to talk. Listen without trying to fix it, stay with them, and help them contact one of the services above.

If they are in immediate danger, call the emergency services.
