What we help with

Online therapy for low self-esteem

Low self-esteem is not about lacking confidence in one area. It is a background belief that you are somehow less than other people, and it shapes which chances you take and what you put up with.

Signs you might recognise

Those beliefs were learned, usually early, and they can be unlearned. Therapy is a practical way to do that.

Recognising yourself in a few of these does not mean something is wrong with you. It means it may be worth a conversation.

  • A critical inner voice that rarely lets up
  • Brushing off praise and dwelling on mistakes
  • Perfectionism or putting things off for fear of getting them wrong
  • Feeling like a fraud who is about to be found out
  • Difficulty saying no or asking for what you need
  • Comparing yourself with others and coming off worse

How therapy helps

Your therapist will suggest an approach based on what you want to change. Common ones include:

  • 1

    Compassion-focused therapy

Develop an inner voice that is on your side, without lowering your standards.

  • 2

    Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)

Find the old rules you live by and test whether they still hold.

    How it works

  • 3

    Schema therapy

Work on long-standing patterns that began in childhood.

    How it works

Three things you can try today

  1. Ask: would I say this to a friend in the same position?
  2. Keep a short daily list of things that went fine. Your brain will not do it on its own.
  3. Practise one small “no” this week.

Common questions

Can therapy really change how I see myself?

Yes. Self-esteem is built from beliefs learned over time, and beliefs can be updated. It takes practice, and a relationship in which you are treated with respect is part of how it changes.

Is low self-esteem a mental health condition?

It is not a diagnosis in itself, but it often sits underneath anxiety, depression and relationship difficulties. You do not need a diagnosis to work on it.
